The Blue Castle
The Blue Castle (1926) The only one of Montgomery's
novels not set wholly or in part on Prince Edward Island, this story grew
out of a day dream Montgomery conjured while on vacation in 1922 in the
woods-and-lakeland community of Bala in the Muskoka area of Ontario. Valancy
Stirling, twenty-nine and unmarried, leads a sterile existence until she
rebels and frees herself of a lifetime of family and social constraints.
Much of the book deals with nature descriptions and the inspiring, poetic
writing of naturalist John Foster. Notice how the book covers focus on the
fantasy "blue castle" of Valancy's day dreams rather than on her
heightened, liberated awareness of the Muskoka "upback." |
