Kilmeny of the Orchard
Kilmeny of the Orchard (1910) When Montgomery had no new novel finished for the Page Company, she expanded a 24,000-word magazine serial ("Una of the Garden") into a 48,000- word novel. Beautiful Kilmeny on a remote farm on Prince Edward Island is mute and communicates through the music of her violin. She recovers her speech when she must save the life of the man who loves her. Notice how the delicacy of the old-fashioned portrait of Kilmeny in the Page edition is replaced by a supposedly more up-to-date and assertive-looking Kilmeny. What do the different images suggest about the publisher's assessment of the potential readers? |
