Emily of New Moon
Emily
of New Moon (1923) Montgomery vowed at the time that she was finished
with Anne forever and created a new character, Emily, unlike Anne but also
an orphan. The Emily trilogy serves as Montgomery's literary autobiography;
Emily Byrd Starr is a budding poet and author who experiences "the flash,"--a
moment when the limitations of this world are swept aside and she sees perfect
beauty beyond. Emily's career is punctuated by psychic experiences. Note
the first-edition cover with its new moon mistakenly reversed, with Emily
enraptured by "the flash," and with Emily's imaginary "Wind Woman" accompanying
her on her walk. The book is dedicated to Montgomery's long-time Scottish
pen-pal, George Boyd MacMillan. |
