Anne of Windy Poplars
Anne of Windy Poplars (1936) Published in England under the title Anne of Windy Willows, this novel goes back in Anne's history to fill in the three years she spent as principal of Summerside High School while Gilbert was in medical school. The novel was prompted by the success of the 1934 film of Anne of Green Gables. Montgomery tries to recapture the flavor of the early Anne world, a world that seemed almost impossibly remote to her since the First World War and her own sufferings with her husband's mental illness. Do the book covers or frontispieces suggest an early, untroubled time in the world's history? |
