Emily's Quest

Emily's Quest (1927) The third and final Emily novel follows Emily's successful writing career and her (almost) unsuccessful love relations. The rapid action at the end of the novel to make it conclude "happily" has prompted much debate about Montgomery's intentions with Emily and her responses to her perceived constraints by a public that demanded a resolution in marriage. Notice how the first-edition cover uses the full moon to suggest the fulfilment of Emily's new moon and uses books to suggest the nature of Emily's quest. Is this artistic focus on growth and fulfilment the theme of the subsequent covers?
