Texte Bobs, one of Montgomery's many grey cats, was originally named Coco but renamed Bobs during the Boer War. Bobs was the nickname of Field Marshall Lord Roberts of Kandahar (Frederick Sleigh Roberts), a veteran of the British forces in India who served as the second Commander-in-Chief (December 1899 - November 1900) during the South African War. Under his guidance, the British army captured Bloemfontein, capital of the Orange Free State Republic, annexed it as the Orange River Colony, took Johannesburg and Pretoria, and defeated Boer troops at Bergendal. In November 1900 he left South Africa, handing over his commander-in-chief responsibilities to Horatio Herbert Kitchener.
