Narrative This carnation was given to fifteen year-old Montgomery by Lady Macdonald, wife of Sir John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada. Montgomery's grandfather, who was accompanying his young granddaughter to Saskatchewan, telegraphed his political colleague, who happened to be touring PEI, and arranged that they join Sir John and Lady Macdonald in Kensington.
