Narrative Montgomery was a judge in the Canadian part of an international competition held by the Kodak Company along with Nellie McClung, Judge Emily Murphy, Wyly Grier, Lt.-Colonel Henri Gagnon, and Rev. Canon Cody. Montgomery favoured a photograph called "The Prospector," and convinced the other judges that it ought to win the competition because it represented the spirit of Canada.
